Red Engine Character Design

Recently, I took a character design course at Red Engine Studios.  My Final was an action scene I was supposed to create based on my conception of my take on 'Starship Troopers.'   Here are generally all the art I did.

Backstory I made for the Concept Art:

Human Hero: Dietrich Ramos
Birth: July 5, 2055
He was born in the industrial city Brasilia on planet Eudora 2 to a Federation diplomat father and a History teacher mother. He has an older brother Kyle who ran off without a word once Kyle turned 18.  Dietrich went to University of Moscow on planet Earth to study History for a year until the major Arachnid invasion of 2075 on Eudora 2.  His parents, along with many refugees, fled to Washington on planet Earth.  He found out that his long-lost brother had enlisted in the Federation Mobile Infantry and has been declared MIA.  Dietrich himself soon enlisted for the Federation Mobile Infantry (partly to find his brother), and through a Field Commander’s commendation for his skill and tactical knowledge, was transferred for Special Ops, working close with Military Intelligence.  His first major mission as Special Ops involved gathering intelligence before coordinating the attack to cut off the supply routes of Arachnid invaders during the Arachnid invasion on Eudora 2.

Bad guy / Aliens:
Archanids are a mystery. These giant, ant-like creatures move in swarms from place to place.  Although they can’t physically move in space, they can survive there—they automatically go into hibernation, however, when they do.  They move from planet to planet via an organic, gigantic hard-shell “spaceship” that are made of alien parts and plant-life, but not “programmed” in an intelligent sense.  They are akin to moving, floating bee-hives that move through space and planets—these contain pockets of helium, oxygen, and other breathable gases.  These ships do not have afterburners but have the ability to manipulate surrounding gravitation forces from planets, moons, and suns.   The ship’s internally heated air sacks allow these structures to float where there is atmospheric pressure and gravity.

These arachnids come in three forms.  First kinds are the drone spider-like “soldiers” that are attracted to shedding of blood and pheromones that are released from each other when they are in attack mode.  In essence, they attack in swarms.   The second kind walk upright with four legs  and has two arms—they are often referred to as “centaurs” by humanfolk.  The third kind looks akin to a balloon (called 'Floaters') with tentacles on the bottom, much like a floating jellyfish.   These have the ability to control the drones via some sort of invisible communication, some speculate, through high-pitched sound waves.

Loved the class!  Special thanks to teachers Dan Luvisi and Justin Fields for their excellent course!

Did someone call a toe truck?

Yeah, you know, because there are times when we do need one...

Just Looking For My Pen...

Don't mind me. I'm just looking for my pen.

Here is how it looks...straight on.:

More Anamorphic drawings...

Here are some more anamorphic drawings from my sketchbook.

I like it because it forces me to rely less on muscle memory and more on strict observation.

Ended sketchbook. Starting a new one.

I have time freed up once again, which is cool.  I recently finished a sketch journal, which took about 3 months. I started a new one today--a landscape format as opposed to portrait format.  Lately, I've been trying to experiment to make my sketches more interesting and challenging for me.

Gangster's moll. Long Pose.

In the morning, I was at Echo Park to join in with LA Sketch Crawl crew.  I got there a bit late and missed them, so I went to the Costumed Long Pose Meetup soon after.   I did an ink sketch of the pose, then did a watercolor version on my sketchbook for the remaining time.

Happy Fourth of July!

Love the idea of relaxing. Relaxing with beer. "You can't be a real country unless you have a beer and an airline. It helps if you have some kind of a football team, or some nuclear weapons, but at the very least you need a beer." -- Frank Zappa

Mads, I tell you!

This is for a caricature challenge with Mads Mikkelson as the subject. Caricaturama Showdown 3000. I was watching the TV show Hannibal the other day, the season finale. Gonna miss this show until they start up again. The show's a bit outlandish with all the use of human body parts and such... but the characters are fairly close to the book Red Dragon. It's a good portrayal of agent Will Graham from the novels...better than the films. Mads Mikkelson as Hannibal is an odd choice, but he's growing on me. I liked the book because it was so technical about how FBI uses DNA evidence to find the killer... the show feels like it focuses a bit too much on the grotesque. Oh well.

Sketch Diary

I carry around a sketch diary and when I get a chance, I draw as much as I can. Here are a few pages I took a picture of. My current sketch diary doesn't use wire-binding like my last one, which makes it better for me to do spreads. I like the texture of the paper as well.

Here it is! Down the line I could probably add a driver or something. Meanwhile, I'm going to try to begin another 3-D model.

Putting touches...will add BMW logo

Got the interior modeled, at least enough to show that there is one. I need the BMW sign and some proper lighting to bring out the shine. I'll probably have it by this week. Maybe add a background?

Bimmer..... still going

My continuous work on my bimmer in 3DS Max. It's getting there, certainly. I'm working out the details now, such as the interior, and parts of the door. Just little things that make a car look like a car...

BMW Concept I8 in progress

Currently working on a 3D model of the BMW I8. Nothing too schmancy. I'm hoping to get a nice rendering done in a week or two if I keep up with this one.

Wandernaught book cover

My latest book cover is for a fantasy novel by Kirk Warrington called Wandernaught. This is the second book that I made a cover for by this author. I believe it's about a family that gets stuck in a fantasy world of sorts. One of them becomes a unicorn and another becomes a tree man, among other things...

Sketch Crawl #38!

Today (1/19/13) was the World Wide Sketch Crawl #38, which is held 4 times a year all over the world.  The meeting place was at Millennium Biltmore Hotel, and then we proceeded to go sketch various places in downtown LA.  Millennium Biltmore Hotel was where they filmed Ghostbusters. If you just ain't hip about what Sketch Crawl is, check out  Anyways, it was very cool. The next one will be on April 13th.
