Admiral Ackbar for Star Wars Day! In color!

Since Star Wars Day is coming and given that I mostly have usually the weekend to do my sculpts, I thought I'd release this today.  Here's Admiral Ackbar!

Couple more angles....

Given that I still have some time until Star Wars Day, maybe I'll sculpt another character...or turn this guy into a poster.. Hmm.

Well, here's a classic song to celebrate Star Wars a little early...

It's a trap! My Admiral Ackbar attempt for Star Wars Day!

So, I'm now sculpting Admiral Ackbar from "Return of the Jedi.  Star Wars day is coming up on May 4th, so I thought I'd make a Star Wars--themed sculpt.

Here's my Work In Progress:

I actually wore an Admiral Ackbar costume in elementary school for Halloween. Pretty bad costume, but then again, so were many costumes back then.  It made one of the top 10 worst halloween costumes from the 70's and 80's on scifimoviepages.com:

On Robot Chicken:

Here's Erik Bauersfeld, the voice of Admiral Ackbar, who passed away recently.

Photo Entry: happy Alien day! I used Zbrush to sculpt this #zbrush #alienday #xenomorph #ninjasonmotorcycles #fanart

Happy 'Alien Day'!

Here's my Xenomorph all posed up and rendered using Zbrush.

I was watching James Cameron's "Aliens" as I was finishing up posing this guy.  I could always add more details on this guy, but I think given the deadline I gave for myself (April 26), which is 'Alien' Day, this should be good for now.

While I'd love to add a colonial marine to go with this sculpt and/or turn it into a poster and so forth, I'm also eager to work on a different sculpt. Perhaps something more human...

Xenomorph...sculpting away and adding colors

So I spent some time on my Xenomorph... sculpted away and added some color as well.  Xenomorphs don't really have much color, luckily.

Ultimately, I made April 26th as my deadline to finish my sculpt--which is supposed to be "Alien" Day.   I think as sculpting goes, it's pretty much there.  I think I just need to pose it now.

Here's what I have so far, rendered up:

Doctor Who? Doctor Strange, you say?

The new trailer for "Doctor Strange" seems to be out. So, I wrote an article on it on Examiner.com.  You can read it here: http://www.examiner.com/article/doctor-strange-teaser-is-released.

It's always fun to see Benedict Cumberbatch playing somebody.  Benedict is of course in "Sherlock" written by the guy who did "Doctor Who."  I got into "Doctor Who" mostly because I was a fan of "Sherlock", which also had Doctor Watson.  Now, looks like I may get into "Doctor Strange" because I somewhat got into "Doctor Who." We all like doctors, I guess. Heck, my brother's a doctor.

All this doctor talk reminds me of this scene:

Xenomorphin Time....and crossovers.

Slowly, but surely, still making some slow progress on my Xenomorph. Been playing the Alien documentary in the background as I sculpt away. Been trying several different techniques, but the usual familiar freehand style seems more fun to do.

W.I.P. #4

And, of course, if you do stuff I do, you have to look around for some references to your material. I enjoy research, and I admit researching is one of the little joys of making art. Now, research doesn't have to involve reading, looking at pictures, or sitting around.  Oftentimes, the best kinds are traveling, hanging out with friends, eating funky food, and taking long walks while researching within your own mindscape.

With that said, here are some fun Xenomorph crossovers I've bumped into..

Iron man + Xenomorph crossover

Chibi Xenomorph

Hey, I'm fan of nostalgia...

...and Spy vs. Spy

But, of course, this one will always be my favorite...

Hiiiisssssssssss... Xenomorphs got nothing on these guys! W.I.P.

So my Xenomorph in Zbrush is making progress.  I'm adding details and putting in the teeth.  Xenomorph is helped quite a bit by teeth. Almost human-like teeth, which makes them creepier.

WIP #2
Started adding teeth....

WIP #3
Adding more details...and an inner jaw....

Ah. Inner jaw... that's one way to creep out your date.

When I was a kid, I used to think a creature having a second jaw inside an outer jaw was silly... that is, until I saw...

Yep. Muray Eels... They have a Pharyngeal Jaw. Jaw within a jaw.  They are the only animals known to use these pharyngeal jaws to capture prey... other than Xenomorphs, of course.

And, what about Chestbusters? Creatures laying eggs inside you until it bursts out of your chest?

Parasitic wasps. Freaks me the heck out. I don't even want to bother explaining it. Here's a Wired article on it.

Game over, man.  Xenomorphs got nothing on parasitic wasps.

April 26th is Alien Day...supposedly.

Supposedly, 20th Century Fox wants to make April 26th the 'Alien Day'  Alien as in Xenomorph...(More info on http://www.slashfilm.com/alien-day/ ).  It rather annoys me when film studios try to make a "special day" for their film and expect fans to get into it, especially since the last few films left such a bad taste in our mouths regarding the franchise.

I certainly don't mind when fans create the days, though.  For example making May 4th 'Star Wars Day'--it's done by the fans and it's kind of clever ("May the Fourth be with you...").

With that said, I still thought it'd be a good time to try sculpting the Xenomorph from the film.  I do like H.R. Giger's designs.  A nice challenge for myself, too--something to make on Zbrush and using April 26th as a deadline.

Here's my work-in-progress so far:
