My Movie Review of "Terminator Genisys"

I wrote another movie review on Examiner.com.  Here is an excerpt:

Terminator Genisys (2015) Rated PG-13. Dir: Alan Taylor

Terminator: Genisys: Featurette - Character Profile: Guardian - John Connor, leader of the resistance continues the war against the machines. At the Los Angeles offensive, John's fears of the unknown future begin to emerge when TECOM spies reveal a...

Just like the first "Terminator", in "Terminator Genisys", Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) is sent to 1984 by John Connor (Jason Clarke) to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) from a killer cyborg (aka. Terminator) and safeguard the future of mankind. However, Kyle Reese finds out that the past he has traveled to has already been altered previously, thus making him navigate around an alternate timeline where Sarah Connor is a seasoned fighter and is already protected by another Terminator (Arnold Schwarzenegger) whom she refers to as "Pops." Although they find that the liquid-metal assassin T-1000 (Byung-hun Lee) is on their tail, they also find out that there is a greater enemy on the loose.
This film has turned into a bit of a self-parody, but that isn't so bad as one might think. One can argue the same for the "Star Trek" reboots. Does that hurt the film? Not necessarily. If it's done well, it's still fun. So, you'll still go watch it. I suppose self-parody is hard to avoid sometimes--just look at all the films that were ever adapted from a TV series (except for "The Fugitive" which might just be original enough not to feel like a parody), let alone the 4th sequel. Yes, Arnold is back in this film. The old characters from the original "Terminator" are back, but played by different actors. The actors all seem to be having a lot of fun (at least probably more fun than Christian Bale had in "Terminator Salvation"), which smooths things out a bit.

The plot just isn't serious. There is more time traveling than there needs to be. There are more enemies than there needs to be. They have blended "Terminator" and "Terminator 2" together. There are time travel elements that remind me of "12 Monkeys" and "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure." I imagine the overall plot of "Terminator Genisys" is something I would more likely see in a SNL or a Mad TV skit-- too silly to take it seriously, but still rather entertaining. This is more than I could say about "Terminator 3" and "Terminator Salvation", which had a simple, by-the-numbers plot that I just didn't care about. This is not to say this film isn't by-the-numbers in other areas--the overuse of CG makes all the action duller than they need to be. Still, while there isn't much originality here, this film has something that the previous two sequels lacked--familiarity. The characters actually feel more familiar this time around...
